Keeping yourself safe while conducting online banking transactions is crucial to protecting your financial information and assets.
Here are some important tips to maintain your online banking security:
- Manage your online banking User ID and Password: If possible, try not to write them down and store near your computer. If you have access to a password manager, use it to securely manage your banking credentials. Also, never share your ID and password with others.
- Create secure passwords. Try to avoid using personal information for your passwords like name, birthdate, zip code, etc. Use a combination of letters, numbers, and special characters, and ensure your password is at least 8 characters. Avoid using the same password for your online banking accounts that you use for other websites.
- Never share your online banking password with a bank employee. A bank employee will never ask for your password. If you receive such a request from someone posing as a Village Bank employee, contact the bank immediately.
- Log off and close your browser when finished. This will ensure that no one can access your accounts when you step away from your computer.
- Set up balance and transaction text and email alerts. This will ensure that you can be immediately notified of any unexpected activity.
- Avoid public computers. You can’t guarantee your safety on a public computer (like in a library or shared work environment), so it’s best to avoid using them for online banking.
- Regularly review privacy settings. Review the privacy settings on your online banking accounts and make sure you’re comfortable with the level of information you’re sharing.
- Enroll in eStatements. Moving to online bank statements will help avoid financial documents being stolen or lost in the mail.
- Use Secure Messages. When contacting The Village Bank on online banking topics, take advantage of the Secure Messaging service. Your messages are encrypted when conversing with the bank, which will prevent prying eyes from eavesdropping on your communications.
- Tips for using Zelle. Zelle payments should only be sent to friends, family, and people you know and trust. When sending a payment via Zelle, always ensure you have the recipient’s correct mobile number or email address. If you plan to send a larger dollar transaction to a new recipient, it is recommended you send them a low dollar transaction first to confirm it arrived at the appropriate recipient.
Remember that no security measure is foolproof, but by following these tips, you can significantly reduce the risks associated with online banking. If you ever suspect that your accounts have been compromised, contact The Village Bank immediately to take appropriate action.
